In 2019, Codice Edizioni decided to renew the graphic design of its books across both its scientific and fiction titles. The aim of the redesign was to achieve consistency and recognizability through a simple and flexible layout. One of the key requirements was to make the cover images as clear and prominent as possibile.
The cover layout is based on a grid that echoes the square shape of Codice’s logo, a distinctive element that was left unchanged. There are several possible placements on the grid for the logo and text, while maintaining a consistent diagonal alignment. Images stand out thanks to the absence of frames and decorative elements that could distract from them.
All books share the same layout and compositional principles, but differ in the iconographic choices for the covers: photographs, historical images and minimalist graphics are used for the science titles, while illustrations by Davide Bonazzi appear on the fiction covers. The two categories also adopt different typographic approaches: a sans-serif for the scientific titles and a high-contrast serif typeface for fiction.
Particular attention is paid to color, with hues kept as vivid as possible in both in images and text.
Selection of book covers designed from 2019 to 2024
Each cover visual extend onto the book spine, creating a colorful and varied overall effect. Spines feature a new identity element: the letter "c", derived from the Codice logo and positioned at the bottom. The result is a cohesive and recognizable design that is, at the same time, dynamic and diverse.
